Earlier today, I was sitting in the cafetaria table with some of my friends, having a little chit chat, and suddenly this topic came up. One of my friends said, “If you’ve never had an enemy, it means that you’ve never stood up for anything your whole life.” This really gets me thinking. I mean, I’ve had one or two argument with other people before, but I never really considered anyone as my enemy. Does that mean I’ve never stood up to my beliefs?
At some point, I realize that the quote really does have a point. When you stick to what you believe, I’m quite sure there will be someone who’s against it. When that happens, it all comes back to us, how are we going to react to that? If we choose to give in and well let them win, it means that we don’t stick up for ourselves, right? but what if the situation is different. What if we are mature enough and decided not to let our ego wins? I’ve also heard this saying that, “When your relationship matters more than your ego.” So does it still mean that we don’t stand up to those who are against us?
But again, when we find something against our principal, it is not easy to chose whether to stand up against it or to look past that difference. I think it depends on each person’s personality. When we believe something, it makes who we are. So if we value someone else’s ideas, does it mean we are losing our own identities?
